Chanel Jaar

Environmental & Social Activist

At just 21, Chanel is part of a youth movement for environmental change in her hometown. From a “garage office” that doubles as a community hub, fish factory, and food garden, Chanel encourages young people to take charge of their future, their coastline, and their community’s sustainability. She represents the next generation of eco-leaders in South Africa.

Ezile Jiba

Member, Coastal Links & Chascavu Fishing Cooperative

Ezile is a dynamic and outspoken fisher and community advocate from the Eastern Cape. As a member of the Chascavu Fishing Primary Co-op and one of the applicants in the case against Shell’s offshore drilling plans, Ezile champions the rights of small-scale fishers and women harvesters. Mentored by award-winning activist Ntsindiso, he helps run local seafood braais for tourists, supplies fresh catch to guesthouses, and fights to keep corporate polluters out of local waters.

Based in Cape Town, Liziwe is a seasoned environmental strategist with decades of experience navigating South Africa’s political, legal, and ecological landscapes. As the strategic engine behind The Green Connection, she works to ensure that policy, science, and community voices intersect to drive meaningful change.

Neville van Rooy

Community Outreach Coordinator, The Green Connection

An award-winning eco-warrior (Eco-Warrior Award, 2022), Neville is a passionate advocate for environmental justice and sustainable livelihoods in South Africa. Fluent in multiple languages and deeply rooted in his community, he leads grassroots outreach for The Green Connection, building bridges between civil society, coastal communities, and climate science.

Walter Steenkamp

Chairperson, Awkotuwa Fishers Cooperative

A veteran fisher and community leader, Walter knows every tide, season, and challenge facing the Northern Cape’s small-scale fishers. As Chair of the Awkotuwa Fishers Co-op, he advocates for fair access to resources and defends his community’s fishing rights amidst growing pressures from extractive industries and renewable energy interests. Walter is a voice for coastal justice and sustainable livelihoods.
